UKCG and FPS Job Titles and Descriptions

The UKCG standard sets out the health & safety training standards applicable to those who direct, manage, supervise or undertake construction related activities. To avoid confusion, the FPS has clarified how the job titles used by FPS Members fit into the job titles and definitions used by the UKCG.

 

UKCG Title and Definition: Piling Job Title and Definition

Operative

persons attending site to undertake construction
activities who does not have any management or supervisory
responsibilities

Piling Operative

Training: 1 day Safety Awareness  

Supervisor

person directly supervising construction related work
activities. The front line supervisor with direct responsibility for putting
people to work and briefing their workers on how to carry out their
work and ensure they are carrying out their work safely.

Charge hand

A role that is likened to that of a trainee foreman: it would be a role that entails taking on some of the
responsibilities of supervising operative as directed by the foreman.

Alternative Titles: Ganger, Leading hand, Lead Driller
Appropriate Training: FPS Piling SSTS

Foreman

The foreman takes on the role of 'supervisor' , and when a contract requires that the role must be
designated/identified.

Alternative Titles: General Foreman, Rig Foreman
Appropriate Training: FPS Piling SSTS

Supervisor

As defined by UKCG.

Alternative Titles: Contracts Supervisor, Contracts Engineer, Operations Supervisor
Training: SSSTS or Trade Association Equivalent Appropriate Training: FPS Piling SSTS

Manager

person managing construction related work activities.
Typically site based or vising personnel with direct responsibility for
planning and managing construction work activities

Engineer

May be a supervisor (as above) but would/could take on the role of manager

Alternative Titles: Contract Manager, Construction Manager, Works Manager; Geotechnical Engineer,
Contracts Engineer
Training: SSMTS; IOSH Managing Safety in Construction (4 days) Appropriate Training: SSMTS; IOSH Managing Safety in Construction
