FPS Piling Site Supervisor Safety Scheme

The course was produced in 2004 by health and safety and training professionals in the Piling Industry. It is reviewed annually to ensure that it is up to date and relevant. It is aimed at supervisors in the piling industry and is recognised by Construction Skills for grant purposes.

The industry recognised course has been designed to provide candidates with the most appropriate training to enable Piling Supervisors to attain and maintain competency levels for health and safety management on site and to develop an understanding of behaviour patterns and culture change.

The FPS course has been produced by the piling industry, for the piling industry ensuring that all relevant topics have been covered and best practice is understood and adhered to. The course identifies all key legislation necessary to give an understanding of responsibility, accountability and health and safety issues relevant to Piling Supervisors. In addition to the topics covered by ConstructionSkills Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) the FPS Course includes the following, piling specific modules:-

Candidates sit a competence test at the end of the course and must achieve a score of 17 out of possible 20 to be awarded a certificate.

The UKCG Supervisor Training Standard requires Supervisors to be able to demonstrate compliance with two criteria:-

1. That they have sufficient knowledge of health and safety gained at a construction specific course of at least two days duration and containing all aspects of the Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course syllabus. Courses must incorporate a form of testing and training providers must issue a certificate stating whether or not the delegate has passed the examination.
2. That they have sufficient skills to be an effective supervisor of their workers. They need to demonstrate having attended training which includes an understanding of behaviour issues, leadership and effective intervention skills.

UKCG requires that Supervisors from specialist trades (including piling) must :-

• possess a pass certificate for a suitable alternative supervisors training course recognised by their trade association OR
• have a level of training recognised by their trade association as being appropriate for the supervision of personnel OR
• hold a pass certificate for a course which satisfies the above criteria.

Holders of a pass certificate for the FPS Supervisor 2 Day Health Safety and Environment Awareness Course meet the above criteria and requirements and satisfy the UKCG Supervisor Training Standard.
